Coordinator: Santa Chiara Graduate School for Ph.D. & Postgraduate Students (UNIVERSITY OF SIENA)

Santa Chiara, High School for PhD and Postgraduate Studies in University of Siena, is a high qualification pole for post-graduate courses and especially for Phd. It was set up by Education Ministry in 2004, after a 5 years experimentation. A Scientific Committee of external experts recognized PhD Schoolsbelonging to Santa Chiara as excellent, according to their degree of internationalization and their research and educational activities. Grouped around the School, there is a scientific community of professors and students from University of Siena and anywhere in the world. The Graduate School is engaged into Multidisciplinary Programmes (Pro.M.)submitted at least by three PhD Schools; it also calls for Visiting Chair in emerging and cross-field disciplines, thus favouring a more flexible work both in research and scientific education. Santa Chiara organizes common courses for PhD students as well as fostering international exchanges. School fellows both contribute to educational activities held by the PhD teaching staff and help students in their research. The Graduate School is endowed with two residences: Collegio Santa Chiara and the Refugio, both placed in the city centre, conceived to accommodate PhD students at the University of Siena, visiting research students from different Universities, chair professors, and School's fellows.
The role of Santa Chiara High School is to coordinate the scientific research and plan the academic actions such as seminars, proM, Chair, within the project.
The goal of Santa Chiara High School for PhD is to foster academic excellence through development of projects that meet national and international standards, enhancing the knowledge processes, through the exchange and collaboration of the different organizations.
Institutional aims of Santa Chiara are the promotion of the multidisciplinary, the education and mobility of research fellows and cooperation within the guiding principle of European Space of Knowledge. The project comes from the initiative of some theatrical artists and PhD students of the Graduate School in Interpretation, Anthropology-Ethnology-Cultural Studies; Logos and Representation; Computer Sciences, Mathematical Logics and Cognitive Sciences.

The Municipality of Siena is always concerned with the conservation of its huge worldwide known artistic and cultural heritage, but it is also involved in the production and promotion of new forms of expression in contemporary art. Among the plenty of its cultural activities, lots of them are dedicated to the performing arts, music and theatre: music festivals as “Città Aromatica”, “Musica Siena”, “Siena Jazz Festival”, theatre and dance for kids “Teatro Ragazzi”, Theathrical and dance season at Teatro dei Rozzi, Voci di Fonte. The Municipality also supports Siena Teatri OPT, and all the activities (shows, workshops, and production) and events at Casa del Teatro Lia Lapini.
Siena Municipality holds the Museo Civico (medieval art permanent collection and the famous frescoes by Simone Martini and Ambrogio Lorenzetti) and participates in the administration of the most important town museums as Santa Maria della Scala, one of the most relevant Italian institution in the field of art conservation with its permanent collection of ancient, modern and contemporary art and exhibition production.The Municipality of Siena supports the research theatre and innovation in performing arts languages in the town. For this reason it’s responsible for:
- production of the play “Emigranci”
- coordination to the theatrical technical planning
- support to the organisation ProM and Chair in Siena
- support to the organization of the final exhibition
- dissemination in the country
Co-organiser: Associazione Culturale Libera Università del Teatro (LaLut)

LaLut was born in 1995 in Siena as a group of university students, encouraged by Prof, Lia Lapini and supported by the Municipality of Siena. LaLut completed its starting self-training inviting guest directors as Bob Marchese and Fiorenza Brogi, Italo Spinelli, Virgilio Liberti and Annalisa Bianco, Claudio Morganti, Alfonso Santagata, Jerzy Stuhr, in order to carry out workshops, original plays and performances. Nowadays is a group of artists including actors, directors, video makers, photographers, musicians, technicians and organizers, which elaborates and drives a plenty of projects of cultural development on the local area of southern Tuscany. Its aim is to contribute to the cultural and artistic development of the territory, through the diffusion and the promotion of theatre. Since 2003 LaLut produces “Voci di Fonte – Festival di Siena”, one of the main emerging theatre festival in Italy, in residence at Municipality Theatre. It also produces shows, performances, workshops, seminars, festivals, videos. In 2001 and 2007 is the first company in the classification of the acknowledged young companies by Regione Toscana, and it is admitted to regional financing (according to the provisions of law N. 45/´00). In 2004 participates to the project Edgar Walpor’s Journey within the UE Culture Programme, producing the play P.P.P. Passaggio per Pianoforte e Piuma. By the connection with other theatrical associations and organizations, LaLut endorses the process for the establishment of research theatre in the Municipality of Siena.
Lalut is always sensitive to development of theatrical processes. The project Playing Identities took shape thanks to the cultural operators and the artistis involved in laLut,
The association also wants to foster the social dimension of the theatre and make aware the public to the contemporary drama through the development of artistic languages.
For this reason, laLut will be responsible both for the call for selection of a director for creole performance and for the general support to scientific and artistic development of the project in Italy.
Co-organiser: Province of Siena - Council for Culture Management, Education, Culture and Sport

Since 1999 District of Siena has been fostering "PORTO FRANCO. Toscana, terra dei popoli e delle culture", a regional project coordinated by Regione Toscana as a means of intercultural dialogue on themes related to diversity – gender, generational, and intercultural clashes between natives and migrants. PORTO FRANCO consists in a network gathering 10 Districts, 200 Municipalities and 100 intercultural centres which represent a significant expression of cultural activism in the Regione Toscana.
Co-organiser: Elicona - Servizi per la Cultura e i Beni Culturali
Elicona Società Cooperativa born in 1998 from a group of young professionals, relating to a Regione Toscana prize for the development of new companies. Its general aim is to provide full services to both private and public entities for cultural and educational projects, as project organization and management; communication and promotion activities (also including web development, videomaking and graphic designing).
In particular, Elicona manages many educational services, within the local museum networks all over the Tuscany, addressed to both teachers and young students of primary and high schools, and has participated, as local technical assistance to EuroBIC Toscana Sud, to the Project " Strategy for the Promotion of Competitiveness and Creativity in the Cultural Industries (∑3C: Culture Competitiveness Creativity)” - INTERREG III.
Its activity is aimed at maximising the impact of the cultural project in the Tuscan territory. Elicona is interested in taking part to the project with respect with:
- its projects and researches about the strategy for the promotion of competitiveness and creativity in the cultural field;
- its usual activities in cultural management and cultural projects' promotion, developed in the local area of Siena district and Regione Toscana.
For this reasons, within this project, Elicona it’s responsible for the general communication plan and for dissemination of the outputs of the project.
